Chap 1 7:12 AM | Ashhaven City

Ashhaven City was a place where people hurried to work, students hurried to school, and criminals hurried to regret their life choices.

Unfortunately, one particular student didn't hurry for anything.

Kiddrick Reel walked down the pavement with one hand in his pocket and a convenience-store sandwich in the other.

His expression was calm.

His steps were lazy.

His eyes were half-lidded.

He looked like a man who had already given up on life despite being young enough to have homework.

A cyclist rang his bell.

RING! RING!

Kiddrick moved half a step to the left without looking.

The cyclist passed him.

A delivery scooter rushed around a corner.

Kiddrick tilted his head slightly.

The scooter passed.

A falling signboard came loose above him.

Kiddrick stopped walking.

The signboard crashed onto the pavement directly in front of his shoes.

He stared at it.

Then he took another bite of his sandwich.

Kiddrick's silent opinion: Poor maintenance.

He walked around the signboard and continued toward school.

Nobody noticed the way he had avoided every accident without even looking properly.

Nobody noticed anything about Kiddrick.

That was precisely how he preferred it.

### 7:45 AM | Ashhaven Academy

The classroom was already noisy.

"Did you watch that new drama last night?"

"Which one?"

"The one where the detective is secretly a killer!"

"Again? Why are all the handsome detectives secretly dangerous?"

"Because ordinary office workers don't make good television!"

A student sitting near the window raised her hand.

"Excuse me. My father is an office worker."

"Does he have a secret identity?"

"No."

"Then I'm sorry for your loss."

The classroom erupted in laughter.

At that moment, the door opened.

Kiddrick entered.

The teacher glanced at the clock.

"Mr. Reel. You're seven minutes late."

Kiddrick looked at the clock.

Then at the teacher.

Then at the clock again.

He slowly raised seven fingers.

The classroom fell silent.

The teacher stared at him.

"Yes. Seven minutes. I can see that."

Kiddrick nodded.

He walked to his seat.

The teacher's eyebrow twitched.

This boy is going to give me a headache.

Kiddrick sat by the window, placed his sandwich wrapper inside his bag, and rested his chin on one hand.

The student beside him leaned closer.

"Hey, Kiddrick."

Kiddrick turned his head.

"Did you do the mathematics homework?"

Kiddrick nodded.

"Can I see it?"

He opened his notebook.

Every answer was correct.

The student blinked.

"Wait. You actually did it?"

Kiddrick nodded again.

"Can you explain question eight?"

Kiddrick stared at the question.

Then he stared at his classmate.

He slowly turned the notebook around.

At the bottom of the page, he had written:

Ask the teacher.

The student looked betrayed.

"You little—"

Kiddrick smiled faintly.

It was barely noticeable, but it was definitely a smile.

His classmate pointed at him.

"YOU CAN BE ANNOYING WITHOUT EVEN TALKING!"

Kiddrick gave him a thumbs-up.

The teacher turned around.

"What's going on back there?"

"NOTHING!"

Kiddrick was already looking out the window.

Perfectly innocent.

Absolutely harmless.

And completely untrustworthy.

### 10:20 AM | The Mathematics Disaster

"Question twelve," the teacher announced. "Who can tell me the answer?"

Silence.

The teacher scanned the room.

"Kiddrick. You."

Twenty heads turned.

Kiddrick slowly lifted his face from his desk.

He looked at the board.

The question was a complicated equation involving several variables.

He knew the answer immediately.

He also knew that answering correctly would invite more questions.

And more questions meant attention.

Attention meant conversations.

Conversations meant people expecting him to respond.

A truly terrible fate.

Kiddrick stood.

He picked up a piece of chalk.

He wrote:

7

The teacher stared.

"Explain your reasoning."

Kiddrick turned around.

He pointed at the equation.

Then at the number seven.

Then he gave the teacher a small, confident nod.

The entire classroom lost its composure.

"WHAT REASONING?!"

"HE JUST POINTED AT IT!"

"IS SEVEN EVEN ONE OF THE OPTIONS?"

The teacher pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Kiddrick, the answer is forty-two."

Kiddrick looked at the board.

He erased the seven.

He wrote 42.

Then he returned to his seat.

The teacher watched him.

"...You knew the answer?"

Kiddrick tilted his head.

A perfectly blank expression.

The teacher sighed.

"Sit down."

Kiddrick sat.

Under the desk, his phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

His eyes moved toward the screen.

A message had appeared from an encrypted contact.

UNKNOWN CONTACT: Assignment confirmed. Target located in Ashhaven's eastern district. Details attached. Deadline: tonight.

Kiddrick read the message.

His expression didn't change.

He locked the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

Then he opened his textbook.

At the top of the page was a large heading:

Introduction to Probability.

Kiddrick stared at it.

His thoughts remained perfectly composed.

Probability of a peaceful evening: approximately zero.

He turned the page.

### 12:35 PM | The Girl Who Wouldn't Leave Him Alone

The school cafeteria was crowded.

Kiddrick sat at a corner table, quietly eating his lunch.

He had chosen the seat for three reasons.

First, it was near an exit.

Second, he could see most of the room.

Third, nobody usually bothered someone sitting alone in the corner.

His calculations had been flawless.

Unfortunately, he had underestimated one variable.

Human curiosity.

"Is this seat taken?"

Kiddrick looked up.

A girl stood beside his table, holding a lunch tray.

He shook his head.

She sat down immediately.

"I'm Mina."

Kiddrick nodded politely.

Mina waited.

He continued eating.

She waited a little longer.

"So... you're Kiddrick Reel, right?"

Another nod.

"You're the guy who never talks?"

He nodded.

Mina leaned forward.

"Can you not talk at all, or do you just refuse to talk to people?"

Kiddrick picked up his phone.

He typed something and showed her the screen.

PHONE: Yes.

Mina stared at it.

"YES TO WHICH QUESTION?!"

Kiddrick calmly returned to his food.

Mina narrowed her eyes.

"You're doing this on purpose."

He gave her a mild, innocent look.

She pointed at him.

"I knew it."

Kiddrick blinked.

An unexpectedly observant individual.

Mina took a bite of her lunch.

"Anyway, I heard you're bad at mathematics."

Kiddrick nodded.

"Really bad?"

He nodded again.

"Then how did you get every answer right on the homework?"

Kiddrick looked down at his lunch.

Mina leaned closer.

"You're suspicious."

Kiddrick slowly pushed a small packet of biscuits across the table toward her.

She stopped.

"...Are you bribing me?"

He nodded.

Mina stared at the biscuits.

Then at him.

Then back at the biscuits.

"I accept."

Kiddrick gave her a thumbs-up.

Five seconds later, she spoke again.

"That doesn't mean I'm done investigating you."

His thumb went down.

Mina laughed.

For the first time that day, Kiddrick's eyes softened a little.

She noticed.

She didn't know why that tiny change in his expression made her feel as though she had discovered something important.

But she decided not to ask.

Not yet.

### 3:40 PM | An Unexpected Incident

Classes ended.

Students flooded through the school gates, discussing homework, weekend plans, and an upcoming school festival.

Kiddrick was preparing to leave when he noticed Mina standing near the entrance.

She was arguing with a man in a dark jacket.

"Give it back! That's my friend's phone!"

The man grabbed the device more tightly.

"Finders keepers."

"YOU STOLE IT!"

Several students watched from a distance, uncertain whether to intervene.

The man shoved past Mina.

She stumbled.

Kiddrick stopped walking.

His gaze shifted from Mina to the man.

The man's right hand was clenched.

His breathing was uneven.

His eyes repeatedly checked the road behind him.

He wasn't simply stealing a phone.

He was nervous.

And people who were nervous enough to keep checking their surroundings usually had something else to worry about.

Kiddrick sighed silently.

I was supposed to leave early today.

Mina noticed him.

"Kiddrick! He took my friend's phone!"

The man glanced at Kiddrick.

"Mind your own business, kid."

Kiddrick pointed at the phone.

Then held out his hand.

The man frowned.

"What?"

Kiddrick wiggled his fingers impatiently.

Give it back.

The man's face darkened.

"You think this is funny?"

Kiddrick tilted his head.

Then he took out his phone and typed a message.

PHONE: You have three seconds.

The man laughed.

"Or what?"

Kiddrick held up three fingers.

The man stepped forward.

Two fingers.

"Listen here, brat—"

One finger.

The man reached for Kiddrick's collar.

And then—

It was over.

Nobody saw exactly what happened.

One moment, the man was reaching forward.

The next, he was standing several steps away, staring at the empty space where Kiddrick had been.

The stolen phone was now in Kiddrick's hand.

The man's wrist was unharmed, but he couldn't understand how his grip had been redirected so effortlessly.

Kiddrick placed the phone in Mina's hands.

Then he looked at the man.

A polite little wave.

The man backed away.

"What the hell are you?"

Kiddrick pointed at himself.

He considered the question.

Then he shrugged.

Mina looked between them.

"Wait. That's it? You just... gave the phone back?"

Kiddrick nodded.

"How did you do that?"

He shrugged again.

Mina narrowed her eyes.

"You're definitely suspicious."

Kiddrick gave her a thumbs-up.

She groaned.

"STOP AGREEING WITH MY ACCUSATIONS!"

Kiddrick walked away.

Behind him, Mina watched with a mixture of confusion and curiosity.

She hadn't seen his movements clearly.

But she had seen the result.

And she knew one thing.

That quiet boy was hiding something.

### 8:53 PM | Ashhaven's Eastern District

The city changed after dark.

Office lights dimmed. Shops closed. The busy streets emptied.

And beneath the ordinary rhythm of Ashhaven, another city came alive.

Kiddrick stood on the rooftop of an abandoned building, wearing dark clothing suitable for moving unnoticed through the night.

His school bag was gone.

His expression had changed.

The lazy student who had pointed at a mathematics problem and confidently answered seven was nowhere to be seen.

His eyes followed the movements of several men entering a warehouse below.

He checked the information on his phone.

TARGET: An intermediary connected to an illegal weapons network.

LOCATION: Eastern District, Warehouse 19.

OBJECTIVE: Confirm the target's identity and retrieve the encrypted ledger.

Kiddrick slipped his phone away.

He examined the building.

Two men at the entrance.

One guard near the loading bay.

Three visible figures inside.

At least one camera covering the eastern wall.

He had already noticed a fourth man hiding behind a vehicle.

Kiddrick's eyes narrowed slightly.

Six visible or suspected. Probably more inside.

He crouched near the rooftop's edge.

A shadow moved beneath his shoes.

It stretched across the concrete despite the absence of any light source capable of producing it.

The darkness gathered around his hand, twisting like smoke drawn toward an invisible flame.

His dark ability.

A secret even more dangerous than his work as an assassin.

Kiddrick looked at the shadow.

Then at the warehouse.

His expression remained calm.

He descended into the darkness.

Inside the warehouse, the men were arguing.

"Where's the ledger?"

"The buyer wants confirmation before midnight."

"And the courier?"

"Missing."

A man in a gray coat slammed his hand against a metal table.

"We don't have time for this. If the information leaks, we're finished."

A faint sound came from behind him.

Tap.

Everyone turned.

Nothing.

One man drew a weapon.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

Then a voice from the far end of the warehouse.

"You're looking for something?"

The men spun around.

Kiddrick stood beside a stack of crates, hands in his pockets.

One of the men frowned.

"Who are you?"

Kiddrick tilted his head.

The man in the gray coat stepped forward.

"How did you get inside?"

Kiddrick pointed toward the door.

Everyone glanced at it.

When they looked back, Kiddrick was closer.

Nobody had seen him move.

The man in the gray coat went pale.

"What are you?"

Kiddrick took out his phone.

He typed.

PHONE: Lost student.

Nobody spoke.

Then one of the men shouted, "HE'S MOCKING US!"

Kiddrick blinked.

Technically, yes.

The first attacker rushed toward him.

Kiddrick stepped aside.

A second attacker swung at him.

Kiddrick ducked.

The third attempted to grab him from behind.

Kiddrick turned, redirected the man's momentum, and sent him stumbling into a stack of empty boxes.

The entire exchange took only seconds.

Kiddrick hadn't even removed his hands from his pockets for the first two attacks.

The remaining men hesitated.

The man in the gray coat slowly stepped backward.

"You're an assassin."

Kiddrick paused.

Then he pointed at himself again.

He shrugged.

The man stared at him.

"Stop doing that!"

Kiddrick's shoulders moved slightly.

He was laughing.

Silently.

And that somehow made everything worse.

The warehouse lights flickered.

Darkness spilled across the floor.

One of the men looked down.

"What's happening?"

The shadows rose behind Kiddrick, stretching across the walls in long, unnatural shapes.

For a brief moment, the warehouse seemed to have lost every source of light.

A cold sensation settled over the room.

Kiddrick's expression became completely still.

No smile.

No amusement.

Only a quiet, unreadable gaze.

"Run!" someone shouted.

The men scattered.

Kiddrick moved through the confusion with precise, controlled steps, avoiding unnecessary harm while disarming those who continued to resist.

A moment later, the warehouse fell quiet.

Kiddrick retrieved the encrypted ledger from the table.

He checked his phone.

CLIENT: Is the objective secured?

He typed.

KIDDRICK: Yes.

CLIENT: Any complications?

Kiddrick glanced at the broken boxes.

At the unconscious men.

At the warehouse lights, which were now inexplicably working again.

He typed.

KIDDRICK: No.

He pocketed his phone.

Then, as he walked toward the exit, another message appeared.

CLIENT: Excellent. Your next assignment will arrive tomorrow.

Kiddrick stopped.

Slowly, he looked up at the night sky.

His face expressed the profound exhaustion of someone who had just realized he would have to deal with another workday.

Tomorrow.

He had school tomorrow.

A mathematics quiz.

An unfinished essay.

And Mina, who would almost certainly question him about the afternoon incident.

Kiddrick closed his eyes.

I should have become a baker.

### 11:16 PM | Kiddrick's Apartment

Kiddrick returned home, changed into comfortable clothes, and sat at his desk.

The apartment was quiet.

No classmates.

No curious questions.

No criminal organizations.

Just him, a desk lamp, and a pile of schoolwork.

He opened his essay assignment.

TOPIC: The Importance of Honesty in Society.

Kiddrick stared at the page.

He thought about his secret identity.

His concealed abilities.

His half-vampire heritage.

His habit of pretending to be stupid.

He looked at the blank document.

Then he typed the first sentence.

Honesty is an important quality that helps people trust one another.

He stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

He deleted it.

He typed another sentence.

Sometimes, keeping a secret is necessary to protect people.

He paused.

Then he nodded.

Acceptable.

He continued writing until the essay was finished.

At 11:42 PM, he finally leaned back in his chair.

His phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

UNKNOWN: I saw you today.

Kiddrick's expression didn't change.

Another message appeared.

UNKNOWN: At the warehouse.

He sat motionless.

A third message arrived.

UNKNOWN: Don't worry. I won't tell anyone.

Kiddrick stared at the screen.

Then typed a single question.

KIDDRICK: Who?

The reply came almost immediately.

UNKNOWN: Someone who knows what you are.

For several seconds, Kiddrick didn't move.

Outside the window, the city's distant lights shimmered against the darkness.

His fingers rested against the phone.

Then another message appeared.

UNKNOWN: Good night, little vampire.

Kiddrick slowly lowered the phone.

His expression remained calm.

But the shadow beneath his desk moved.

Just once.

Kiddrick looked toward the window.

For the first time that day, he seemed genuinely interested in what tomorrow might bring.

He opened his contacts and created a new entry.

Name: Annoying Person.

He put the phone away.

Then turned off the desk lamp.

In the darkness, a faint smile appeared on his face.

Well.

School might finally become interesting.
